Stepping into a managerial role has been disorienting - not because the work is harder, but because it’s less visible. I’m used to producing output. I’ve always been someone who collects keys. But management asks something different: giving them away.
Strangely, the place this clicked first wasn’t in managing people - it was in working with AI agents.
I’d give access to a system, delegate a task, move on and return to something built. At one point, five things were progressing without my hands on them.
The best managers don’t hoard responsibilities.
They give away keys until only one remains: the one that opens the front door.
Delegation is trust in action. It means not needing to touch everything yourself. The real win is showing up to find everything already in motion.

“You need to be unreasonable to see a world that doesn’t yet exist”
I’m in the middle of a project moving faster than anything I’ve done before. No roadmap, no guarantees - just momentum. We build, collide with reality, adjust, and go again.
That pace isn’t accidental. It’s set by a partner with relentlessly high standards. He pushes even when things are working. Especially when they’re working.
At first, it felt unreasonable.
And that’s exactly what it was.
But I’ve come to understand: unreasonableness isn’t dysfunction - it’s direction. It’s pressure applied not to break things, but to shape what doesn’t exist yet.
There’s a quote often linked to Steve Jobs: “Our job is to figure out what customers are going to want before they do.” That kind of work doesn’t come from playing it safe or staying polite. It comes from pushing past what makes sense today.
Reasonable people optimize what already exists.
Unreasonable people imagine what could.
What I’ve learned: being unreasonable isn’t about being difficult. It’s about refusing to accept that the current version is the final one.

“Grace note: a sweet but non-essential addition to your experience”
The first phase of building anything is restraint. You define the core, protect it from noise, and resist the urge to add too much too soon. Without that discipline, nothing else matters.
But once the thing works, the real challenge begins:
How should this feel to use?
In Unreasonable Hospitality, Will Guidara describes grace notes - small, intentional gestures that aren’t required, but are remembered. Not because they’re functional, but because they reveal intent.
In software, grace notes live in micro-interactions: a pause, a gesture, a shift in rhythm. They don’t improve performance. They improve perception.
I’ve started noticing this shift in my own tools. Once the core is solid, every remaining choice feels less like engineering and more like editing tone. Not “what should this do?” but “what does this say?”
Grace notes aren’t about features or flair.
They’re about authorship.

These ideas don’t come from inspiration alone - they come from a system that makes returning possible.
